Thiruvasagam

Totally bowled over by Ilaiyaraaja’s Thiruvasagam, although I do not understand the meaning in most parts. I guess this will the case for most of us. Translations of these songs have been established by Rev G.U Pope (The Tiruvaacagam or ‘Sacred Utterances’ of the Tamil Poet, Saint and Sage Maanikka-vaacagar, Rev.G.U. Pope, Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1900.) and edited extensively at http://www.shaivam.org/siddhanta/thivapop1.htm. However, when I read them, I hardly understand the meaning (probably due to my lack of polished literary skills). Hence, I am attempting to translate the songs in my own words (which may be easier to understand, I don’t know!).

As always, pardon any glaring mistakes. I will attempt to translate each song stanza by stanza.

First,

poovar senni mannan em puyanga peruman chiriyomai
ovaathu ullam kalandhunarvay urukkum vella karunaiyinal
aava enna pattanpai atpattir vanthorupadumil
povom kalam vandhadhukan poivittudaiyan kazalpugave

The king who is adorned with flowers in his hair, Oh my Lord ! who adorns a snake on his shoulder (Lord shiva)! even to lowly people like us,
incessantly he gels into our hearts and transforms into our feeling, he does this with his flood of mercy that dissolves all,
he is the one who conquers us with his love and affection, this is a call to please assemble here as one,
Time has come to leave this world which is a lie and attain the footsteps of the bearer of truth (Lord Shiva)!

pugavae vaeNdaa pulangaLilneer puyangap perumaan poongazhalkaL
migavae ninaimin mikkavellaam vaeNdaam poaga vidumingaL
nagavae nYaalath thuLpugundhdhu naayae anaiya namaiyaaNda
thagavae yudaiyaan thanaichchaarath thaLaraa thiruppaar thaandhdhaamae

do not let yourself be conquered by your five senses,  instead think of the flower like feet of the snake adorning Shiva,
Intensely think only of him, nothing else is needed. Let go of everything else!
He entered into this world with a smile and ruled over even us dog like souls,
There will be no weakness in the heart of those who seek and cling to his holiness Shiva!

thaamae thamakku chutRamum thaamae thamakku vidhivagaiyum
yaamaar emadhaar paasamaar ennamaayam ivaiboagak
koamaan paNdaith thoNdaroadum avandhan kuRippae kuRikkoNdu
poamaa Ramaimin poyneekkap puyangan aaLvaan ponnadikkae

We are our kith and kin! we are  the creators of our destiny !
who are we, what is ours, who are our affectionate ones? let all these illusions go away!
With the ancient devout servants of the King, guided by his words and making them ones goal in life,
let us leave the falsehood of this world  and reach the blissful feet of the snake adorning Lord Shiva!

adiyaar aaneer elleerum agala vidumin viLaiyaattaik
kadisae radiyae vandhdhadaindhdhu kadaikkoN tirumin thirukkuRippaich
sedisae rudaila chelaneekki chivaloagathae namaivaippaan
podisaer maeLip puyangandhan poovaar kazhaRkae pugavidumae.

All you devout Servants of Lord shiva,  let go of the games you play seeking worldly pleasures,
reach to the safety of the Lord’s feet,  and be guided by the his sacred words!
he will make us get rid of this dirty sinned body,  and help us establish in Sivalogam,
The one who is smeared in sacred ash and adorning the snake will keep you protected in the shadows of his flower like feet,

vidumin veguLi vaetkainoay migavoar kaalam iniyillai
udaiyaan adikkeezhp perunjjaathoadu udanpoa vadhaRkae orup padumin
adaivoam naampoay chivaburathuL aNiyaar kadhava thadaiyaamae
pudaibatturugip poatRuvoam puyangaL aaLvaan pugazhkaLaiyae.

let go off the diseases of anger and lust; there is no more time to waste!
unite in a large gathering to travel and reach the feet of the Lord,
we will definitely find refuge in Sivapuram, and for us, its doors will not be shut,
let us melt in ecstasy and sing praises of the Lord adorning the snake who rules us!

niRpaar niRkanil laavulagil nilloam ininaam selvoamae
poRpaal oppaandh thirumaenip puyangan aavaan ponnadikkae
niRpeer ellaandh thaazhaadhae niRkum parisae oruppadumin
piRpaal nindRu paezhkaNithaaR peRudhaR kariyan perumaanae.

Let those who want to stay back stay, we shall not stop in this world that does not obey (impermanent),
to reach the sacred feet of the snake adorning Lord with a golden hue whose beauty is only comparable to himself,
those who stay back, will only only regret it ! hence come and join us!
if you delay this opportunity,  reaching the lord will be hard!
