Thai pongal (Harvesting day) has arrived! the milk too has boiled and is overflowing (marking the auspiciousness), sing a song in merriment!
Hail and sing the glory of this great river where the colorful (joyous) women dance along its bank!

This Ponni (River Kaveri) is the lovable mother of the habitants of southern states,
she is a divine woman who adorns water as her clothing,

 கல்மேடு தாண்டிவரும் காவேரி நீராலே

Right from the time of our forefathers, we have had 3 harvests a year; who is the reason behind it?
It is because of the Kaveri water that comes traveling over the stone hills.

(6)சேத்தோட சேர்ந்த விதை நாற்று விடாதா
 நாத்தோடு சேதி சொல்ல காற்று வராதா

naathoadu saedhi solla kaatRu varaadhaa

wouldn’t the seed that went in the mud spring up,
wouldn’t the breeze come along the sprung crops and give us the (good) news!

(7)செவ்வாழை செங்கரும்பு சாதி மல்லி தோட்டம் தான்
 எல்லாமே இங்கிருக்க ஏதும் இல்ல வாட்டம் தான்

naathoadu saedhi solla kaatRu varaadhaa

The (red) banana fields, the sugarcane  fields, the jasmine fields,
when all these are here, there is nothing to be upset about!

(8)நம்ம  சொர்க்கம்  என்பது  மண்ணில்  உள்ளது  வானில்  இல்லையடி
 நம்ம இன்பம் என்பது கண்ணில்  உள்ளது கனவில்  இல்லையடி

Out heaven is in the soil not in the skies. Oh dear!
