Maalai pozhuthin mayakathile
naan kanavu kanden thozhi
manadil irundhum
varthaigal illai
kaaranam yaen thozhi
kaaranam yaen thozhi

while entranced by the dusk,
I had a dream! oh friend!
Even my heart stopped
saying a word!
(can also be interpreted as : “while in my heart, I cannot put it into words”)
what could be the reason? oh friend!
what could be the reason? oh friend!

inbam silanaal
thunbam silanaal
endravar yaar thozhi
inbam kanavil
thunbam ethiril
kaanbathu yaen thozhi
kaanbathu yaen thozhi

it is said that in life, happiness is for some time,
and suffering is for some time,
who said this? oh friend!
while for me happiness is only in my dreams,
and only sufferings are in reality,
why is this the case? tell me! oh friend!
why is this the case? tell me! oh friend!

manam mudithavar pol aruginile or
vadivu kanden thozhi
mangai en kayyil
kungumam thandhaar
maalai ittaar thozhi
vazhi marantheno vandhavar nenjil
saainthuvittaen thozhi
avar maraven maraven endraar
udane marandhu vittaar thozhi,

paranthu vittaar thozhi

In my vicinity, I thought I saw someone who looked like
my beloved! oh friend!
he gave into this woman’s hands, saffron,
and also exchanged garland! oh friend.
did I loose my path into the heart of my beloved?
I feel apart! oh friend!
he said he would never forget me,
but he forget me immediately!
He forgot! oh friend!
He flew away! oh friend!

Kanavil vanthavar yaarena kaettaen
kanavar endraar thozhi
kanavar endraal avar
kanavu mudinthathum pirinthathu yaen thozhi
ilamai ellam verum kanavu mayam
ithil maraithathu sila kaalam
thelivum ariyaathu mudivum theriyaathu
mayankuthu ethirkaalam
mayankuthu ethirkaalam

I asked who was the who who came is my dreams?
he told he is my husband! oh friend!
If he were my husband,
why did he separate when the dream finished? Oh friend!
all of youth spills over in a dreamy state,
in it, is lost some time!
there is no clarity, there is no conclusion in sight,
the future is in a dizzy (and confused)!
the future is in a dizzy (and confused)!
