The quintessential moment of Mahabhaarata is the Kurukshetra war, where Lord Krishna (who is the charioteer of Arjuna) preaches the Bhagavadgita to Arjuna, at a time when Arjuna is perplexed and is sickened by the fact that he is at war with the Kauravas army (comprising his own kins). He is confused about what is righteous, what is wrong and then turns to Krishna for his advise. It is then that Krishna reveals his divine form, and preaches him the Bhagavadgita.

Kannadasan so succinctly and perfectly captures the essence of Bhagavadgita in his words, absolutely stunning!

Oh Arjuna! the one who is flustered about death (that you will bring to your kins due to the war),
let me explain the nature of death,
the soul is immortal,
it will always be reborn!

மேனியைக் கொல்வாய், மேனியைக் கொல்வாய்,
வீரத்தில் அதுவும் ஒன்று
நீ விட்டு விட்டாலும் அவர்களின் மேனி
வெந்து தான் தீரும் ஓர் நாள்

maeniyaik kolvaay, maeniyaik kolvaay,
veerathil adhuvum ondRu
nee vittu vittaalum avarkaLin maeni
vendhdhu thaan theerum oar naaL

You will only kill the (materialistic) body, Kill the (materialistic) body,
It is a part of the valor,
Even if you spare them now,
some day, their bodies will be burnt in the pyre anyways (death)

என்னை அறிந்தாய், எல்லா உயிரும்

எனதென்றும் அறிந்து கொண்டாய்

கண்ணன் மனது கல் மனதென்றோ

காண்டீபம் நழுவ விட்டாய்

You have realized me (as being the god, the universe),
You have also realized that all that is living is mine,
You might presume that I (Krishna) am stone hearted (for having asked you to kill your kins in the war),
In the process you let you bow slip away (lost sight of your duties),

மன்னரும் நானே, மக்களும் நானே

மரம் செடி கொடியும் நானே

சொன்னவன் கண்ணன், சொல்பவன் கண்ணன்

mannarum naanae, makkaLum naanae

maram sedi kodiyum naanae

sonnavan kaNNan, solbavan kaNNan

I am the king, I am also the people (the subjects),
I am the tree, the plants! (I am omnipresent and everything alive is but a part of me!)
that is what Krishna (the god said), this is what I (the mortal form of god, Krishna, who is driving your chariot) say,


துணிந்து நில் தர்மம் வாழ
புண்ணியம் இதுவென்று உலகம் சொன்னால்
 
அந்தப் புண்ணியம் கண்ணனுக்கே

போற்றுவார் போற்றலும் தூற்றுவார் தூற்றலும் 

போகட்டும் கண்ணனுக்கே
கண்ணனே காட்டினான், கண்ணனே தாக்கினான்
 
கண்ணனே கொலை செய்கின்றான்

காண்டீபம் எழுக! நின் கை வன்மை எழுக

இக்களமெலாம் சிவக்க வாழ்க

andhdhap puNNiyam kaNNanukkae

Stand up daringly for the sake of upholding dharma (righteousness),
If this world says that your actions amounts to accruing virtues (or bringing blessings),
even those accrued virtues are Krishna’s (culminate in god),
The praises of the one’s who appreciate, and the criticism of the detractors,
let them all belong to Krishna (the god),
It is Krishna (the god) who pointed, It is Krishna (the god) who attacked,
It is Krishna (the god) who kills,
Raise your bow, let your expertise raise and hands gain strength,
As this field gets filled with red (due to the blood of the killed), may your glory live long!

பரித்ராணாய சாதூனாம்

விநாசாய துஷ்க்ருதாம்

தர்ம சம்ஸ்தாபனார்த்தாய 

சம்பவாமி யுகே யுகே

parithraaNaaya saadhoonaam

vinaashaaya dhushkrudhaam

dharma samSthaabanaarthaaya 

sambavaami yugae yugae

To uplift the good and virtuous souls,
and to annihilate the evil,
as well as to re-establish and uphold the natural law (of righteousness),
I will advent, in every age!
