[kochadaiiyaan] Maattram Ondrudhaan Maaraadhadhu ..

Its been a long time that I wrote a translation. Caught up with Life :). But, when I listened to this song, could not stop myself from writing the translation. Totally bowled over.

you may have borne a thousand wounds in your chest,
but your life bears a hundred thousand wisdoms,

பொறுமைகொள் தண்ணீரைக்கூட சல்லடையில் அள்ளலாம்
அது பனிக்கட்டி ஆகும்வரை பொறுத்திருந்தால்
பணத்தால் சந்தோஷத்தை வாடகைக்கு வாங்கலாம்
விலைக்கு வாங்க முடியாது
பகைவனின் பகையை விட நண்பனின் பகையே ஆபத்தானது
சூரியனுக்கு முன் எழுந்து கொள்சூரியனை ஜெயிப்பாய்
நீ என்பது உடலா உயிரா பெயரா 
மூன்றும் இல்லை செயல்

adhu panikatti aagum varai poruthirundhaal,
panathaal santhosathai vaadagaikku vaangalaam,
vilaikku vaanga mudiyaadhu,
pagaivanin pagaiyai vida, nanbanin pagaiye aabathaanadhu,
sooriyanukku mun ezhundhu kol, sooriyanaye jeyipaai,
nee enbadhu udala uyira peyara,
moondrum illai seyal,

“change” is the only thing that does not change! (change is permanent part of life!)
change! change is permanent!
whatever changes, merges into the heart (intellect/soul),
whatever does not change, perishes
be patient, even water can be carried in a sieve,
only if we are patient and wait for it to turn into ice,
One can only rent happiness with money,
You cannot own it with money,
(money only brings temporary happiness, true happiness cannot be bought by money)
the enmity of a friend is more dangerous than the enmity of an enemy
wake up before the Sun rises, you will win the Sun!
what are “you”? the body? the soul? the name?
none of the three; your doing (your actions define you)

(5)உடலா உயிரா பெயரா நீ ?
மூன்றும் இல்லை செயலே நீ 
விதியை அமைப்பது இறைவன் கையில் 
அந்த விதியை முடிப்பது உந்தன் கையில்

udala uyira peyara nee?
moondrum illai seyale nee
vidhiyai amaipadhu iraivan kayyil
andha vidhiyai mudipadhu undhan kayyil

are you your body, or your soul or your name?
none of the three, you are what you do (your actions define you),
god designs your fate,
fulfilling that fate is in your hands (through your efforts),

(6)உன் வில்லோடு வில்லோடு வீரம் கொடு 
உன் சொல்லோடு சொல்லோடு மாற்றம் கொடு 
மாற்றம் ஒன்று தான் மாறாதது

with your bow, emanate valour,
with your words, emanate change,
“change” is the only thing that does not change!

(7)நீ போகலாம் என்பவன் எஜமான்
வா போகலாம் என்பவன் தலைவன்
நீ எஜமானா? தலைவனா?
நீ ஓட்டம் பிடித்தால் துன்பம் உன்னை துரத்தும்
எதிர்த்து நில் துரத்திய துன்பம் ஓட்டம் பிடிக்கும்
பெற்றோர்கள் அமைவது விதி, நண்பர்களை அமைப்பது மதி

nee pogalaam enbavan yejamaan,
vaa pogalaam enbavan thalaivan,
nee yejamaana? thalaivana?
nee oattam pidithaal, thunbam unnai thurathum,
ethirthu nil thurathiya thunbam oattam pidikkum,
petrorgal amaivadhu vidhi, nanbargalai amaipadhu madhi,

One who says  “You may go”  is a master,
One who says  “Come lets go”  is a leader,
are you a master? or a leader?
if you run away, the sorrows will follow you,
if you stop and face the sorrow boldly, these sorrows will start to sprint away
who you are parents are is fate (you have no say in it), however the way you choose your friends reflects your “intelligence” (it shapes who you become)

(8)சினத்தை அடக்கு
கோபத்தோடு எழுகிறவன் 
நஷ்டத்தோடு உட்காருகிறான்
நண்பா எல்லாம் கொஞ்ச காலம்

sinathai adakku,
kovathodu ezhugiravan,
nashtathodu utkarugiran,
nanba, ellam konja kaalam,

control your anger,
one who rises with anger,
will sit back in loss,
my friend! all this is for a short while (your life, your sufferings, your happiness, every thing!)
