[Vietnam veedu] un kannil neer vazhindhaal…

Dedicated to true love, love between a husband and wife, love that has seen the test of time… wonderful lines of  Kannadasan (and Bharathi in bits)… masterpiece written all over it. Try not to cry at the end of it 😛

Movie: Vietnam veedu
Poet: Kannadasan, Bharathiyaar
Singer: T.M.Sounderajan
Music Director:  K.V.Mahadevan
 Song Sequence: (1)-(1)-(2)-(1)-(3)-(3)-(4)-(1)-(5)-(6)-(6)-(7)-(1)-(8)-(9)-(9)-(10)-(1)-(2)-(1)

(1)un kannil neer vazhindhaal,
en nenjil udhiram kottudhadi,
(2)en kannil paavai andro,
kannamma en uyir ninnadhandro,

When I see tears trickling down your eyes,
blood pours out of my heart,
you are the vision in my eyes,
Oh Kannamma! my soul (life) is yours,

(3)unnai karam pidiththen,
vaazhkai olimayamaanadhadi,
(4)ponnai manandhadhanaal sabaiyil,
pugazhum valarndhadhadi,

I held your hand (in marriage),
my life has been bright since then,
having married gold (You),
my stature and fame has grown among people,

(5)kaala sumaithaangi pole maarbil enai thaangi,
veezhum kanneer thudaippai,
adhil en vimmal thaniyumadi,
(6)aalam vizhudhugal pol,
uravu aayiram vandhum enna,
(7)vaer ena nee irundhaai
athil naan veezhndhu vidaathirundhen

like a bearer of burden of time, you have held me along your breasts (heart),
you wiped the tears that shed from my eyes,
which pacified my pain (swelling/rage),
just like the prop roots of the banyan tree,
Even if thousand relations came by,
you are there like the root of the tree,
due to which I managed to stay on without falling,

(The support of Banyan tree is mainly attributed to the prop roots at older stages and the root slowly loses its significance. But here, since the prop roots (children and relatives) aren’t supportive, the banyan (The hero) loses support, but held together with the strength of the root (wife)

(8)mullil padukkaiyittu,
imaiyai moodavidaathirukkum,
pillai kulamadiyo, ennai pethamai seithadhadi,
(9)perukku pillai undu,
pesum pechukku sonthamundu,
(10)en thevaiyai yaar arivaar,
unnai pol theivam ondre ariyum,

A bed of thorns was spread for me,
I couldn’t even close my eyes, (indicator of bad times)
my children almost made be a mad man,
I have children for namesake,
I have relations for the sake of conversation,

Who understands my needs better?

Only a goddess like you will know.
