[Kamal kavidhai] grahanaadhi grahanangal…

[paypal_donation_button align=”center”]

Well, I am not so sure if I totally relate/agree to the lines of this poem, however I can truly see the angst that the poet ( Kamal ) has about god. If a superior power (god)  existed (I hope he does exist), he wouldn’t see people suffer like now. The poem clearly reflects the maturity and stature of the great person that Kamal hassan is. Hats off… its a wonderful poem… starts at 3.00 in the video

Poet: Kamal Hassan

grahanaadhi grahanangal appalume oru asahaaya shakthi undaam,
aalukku aal oru polippiraikirukkiyum aarukkum vilangaadhadhaam,

I am told, that somewhere beyond all the planets, there is an invincible power (God),
although there are numerous accounts(in the literature) of this power, no one knows (understands) it yet,

athai bayandhu, athai unarndhu, athai thuthippadhu vanri peridhedhum vazhi illayaam,

it seems you don’t have a choice other than to dread it, feel it , and sing praises of it,

naam seidha vinai ellam mun seythathendradhu vidhi ondru seyviththadhaam,
adhai vella munaivorai sadhi kooda seidhadhu anbodu ool serkumaam,

it seems that all the ill (bad things) that we do(or go through) now, is due to “fate” and a consequence of past karma ( in previous birth),
and people who try to challenge their “fate”, shall be (lovingly) taught a lesson (brought down by inflicting pain/damage) through deceit,

kurudaaga sevudaaga maladaaga mudamaaga karu serkum thirumoolamaam,
kusta guhyam, putru, soolai, moolam endra kroorangal athan siththamaam,

it seems this holy power seeds the wombs with the blind, deaf, infertile , handicapped ,
(if god is all powerful and truly running this world, why are deaf, blind, infertile and handicapped people born, is he so heartless)
why do dreaded diseases like leprosy, cancer, stomach ailments, piles exist, are all this its work? ( when it is unhappy with you),

punnil vaalum pulu punniyam seithidin pudhu janmam thandharulumaam,
kodikku eswarargal perithaaga varundhaamal sodhiththu gathi serkumaam,
elaikku varum thuyarai vedikkai parpadhadhan vaadikkai vilaiadalaam,

even if the worm that lives in wounds does good deeds, it seems it will be blessed with a better/new life (rebirth as a better organism?),

the wealthy are not made to suffer much, they are let off after having  tested them for some time by this power and made to reach their goal,

however the hardships and the turmoil that poor people go through is just being witnessed by this power (to no avail), its projected that  it is a usual drama (game) played by this power so that these people worship it more.

nerkindra nervellam nervikkum naayagam por kooda adhanin seyalaam,
paranigal potridum uyir kolli mannarku tharani thandu adhu kaakumaam,

it seems that every things that ever happened, is happening, or will happen is by the will of this power, even the wars that are being fought  are its acts,

this power gave power to all the evil kings (who killed innumerable lives) that were glorified by poets in the past and protected them when they were doing all the damage, ( what kind of a power is this?)

naanooru latchathil oru vindhai uyir thetri alkulin sinai serkumaam,
asurarai pilandha pol anuvaiyum pilandhadhu anugundu seiviththadhum,
paradesam valgindra appavi manidharai palagaaram seidhundadhum,
pillayin kariundu nambinaarku arulidum parivaana para brahmmame,

among 40 million sperms, only one sperm wins (gets life) and fertilizes the egg, ( how can life be so unfair if it is run by this just power that we call god),

this power is portrayed as the one which killed all the evil forces in the world, is it also the reason why now we are able to break open atoms and make atomic bombs (are all these too its grace?),

all the innocent people who are living in the farlands ( I think referring to the srilankan tamil genocides) were killed and eaten as snacks by this power (what was this power doing when these innocent lives were killed?),

on the contrary, to disciples who killed their own sons to feed this power, it graced them with boons, it is truly the ultimate power (sarcastically) ( referring to Chiruthonda Nayanar)

utrarum uravinarum katru karpithavarum ulamaara tholu sakthiyai,
matravar vayyu bayam kondu nee potridu, atrathai undendru kol,

Since your parents, your relatives  your teachers are all preaching and forcing their belief on you, go on and start  worshipping this power just as they do,

do it for the fear they have instilled in you about this power, even though you haven’t seen it, start firmly believing that it exists,

aagama kulam moolgi mumalam kali, arivai aathiga salavaiyum sei,
kottadithu potru maniyadithu potru karpoora aaraththiyai,

as was sermoned to you, immerse yourself in ponds ( and let go of your toxins)  to wash off all your sins, get you mind laundered  with the existence of this power,

let the worship begin by beating the drums and ringing the bells, also do  the camphor ritual

Hi Ganesh, this is my perspective on what the poet means.

Let us say that your clothes have been torn at revealing places, compromising your integrity and decency. Now lets say you are given a needle. Now instead of stitching your clothes, if you focus on stitching a carpet which has only ornamental value, does it make sense?

Similarly, when we know that our human society has so many serious issues for which we need to find solution to, why should we focus on idol worship and dividing people based on religion etc.,

If some one points out this perspective and you choose to ignore it, please do. It is only at your loss.

this refers to the story of Chiruthonda Nayanar. Shiva disguised as a sage came to this house and asked for man flesh, without knowing what to do the nayanar and his wife cooked their son and gave it to shiva disguised as a sage. After eating the food, the sage asks for their son to come and then the couple were helpless. The sage then called the boy’s name and the boy came alive and kicking from the room running to the sage.
