Kallikaatil pirandha thaaye
Enna kallodachu valartha neeye
Mullukaatil molacha thaaye
Enna mullu thaikka vidala neeye

Oh Mother! the one born in the society where female infanticide was common.
(Euphorbia tirucalli- a thorny milkweed like plant that was used for female infanticide in rural areas)
You raised me working in a stone quarry
Oh mother! the one who sprung in the thorn land!
You did not let the thorns sew me(You raised me in a way that I never felt any hardships)

Kaadaikum, kaatu kuruvikkum
Indam putharukul idam undu
Koodaikum adikkum kulirukum
Thaaye othungadan idam unda

For the quail, and the wild sparrow,
they have a place in the shrub to live (that they call home)
In the time of summer, and when the extreme cold beats you down,
Oh mother! did you have a place to retreat?

Karatu metaye maathuna
Ava kalla pulinchi kanji uthuna

You transformed the bumpy irregular path (hardships of life)
You squeezed stones to feed us porridge (you broke stones to earn a living and feed us)

Ulavu kaatula vitha vithaipa
Onaan karatula kool kudipa
Aavaram kulaiyile kai thudaipa
Paavamappa

She used to sow seeds In the tilled field,
She drank porridge in fields filled with garden lizards,
She used to clean her hand using a bunch of aavaram plants (Senna auriculata),
She is pitiable!

Vaeli mullil ava virageduppa
Naazhi arisi vachu olai yerippa
Pula unda micham undu usur valappa
Thiyagam appa

She gathers wood from the thorns (that are used to build fences),
She takes a naazhi of rice and cooks using firewood,
(naazhi (a small quantity) – ancient tamil measurement unit: see http://www.siththarkal.info/2012/05/ancient-tamilians-measurement-units.html)
She eats the leftovers after her child finishes, and survived on it,
She is the epitome of sacrifice!

Kizhaku vidiyum muna mulikura
Ava ulakka pidichudan pirakura
Manna kindi dan polaikira
Udal makki pogum matum ulaikira

She wakes up before the sun rises in the east,
She was born with a olakkai (a thick stick used to dehusk grains (symbolising hard work))
She lives by mixing the soil
She words hard till her body gives up!

Thangam thani thangam maasu illa
Thaai paal onnil matum thoosu illa
Thaai vazhi sontham pola paasam illa
Nesam illa

She is a pure gold that has no contamination
Mothers milk is the only thing that has no impurities
There is no affection like the one from a mother
There is no better love!

Thaaye kayil enna manthiramo
Kepakkadiyil oru nei olugum
Kaanja karuvaadu then olugum
Ava samaikaiyile

Oh mother, what is the magic that you have in your hands.
The millet flour balls would overflow with ghee (overflows with taste)
The dried fish would overflow with honey (overflows with your sweetness),
when she cooks

Sontham nooru sontham irukuthe
Petha thayai pola onu nilaikutha
Saami nooru saami irukuthe
Ada thaai rendu thaai irukutha

There are a hundred relationships,
Does any of them last as the one with the mother?
There may be hundred gods,
But, do you ever have two mothers? (she is unique and superior to god)

Another version of this song (sung by Unni Menon) has a few more verses,

Aaru illa ooril kinarirukku
Koyil illa ooril thaai irukku
Thaayilla ooril nizhal irukka
Anbil nesamirukka

In a village without a river, there would be a well for water.
In a village without a temple, there is mother.
Does any place have people growing without a shelter called mother?
Could anyone’s love be as true as the mother’s love?)
